On the evening before the official opening of the festival on Thursday 25th October an art exhibition by 15 local artists will be unveiled in several locations and shop windows throughout the town.

 

Patrick O’Keeffe Traditional Music Festival Comes of Age   
 
The 21st annual Patrick O'Keeffe Traditional Music Festival will be held in Castleisland from Friday, October 25th  to Monday 28th  2013.
This year’s festival is doubly special in that it marks the 50th anniversary of the death of Patrick O’Keeffe and the 21st anniversary of the founding of the event itself.
 
The main details for the 2013 Patrick O’Keeffe Traditional Music Festival have just been released and a packed-as-usual programme awaits the visitors for the weekend.
Though provisional in nature and subject to change as the event comes closer, there is a lot to look forward to in a read through its contents. 
There are enquiries coming in from all over the world for details of the festival and it always manages to throw up a few surprises.
All the usual favourite events are in there and the programme is beginning to look like the proverbial something-for-everyone menu.
The weekend gets underway for the past few years on the Thursday evening with the opening of an art exhibition at various venues throughout the town.
There are many events that can be nailed down in terms of time and venue. So, with that word ‘Provisional?in mind let’s have a traipse through what’s on offer.

Thursday 24th October: Art exhibition by 15 local artists in several locations and shop windows throughout the town.

Friday, October 25th at 8pm. Minister for Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht, Jimmy Deenihan, TD will officially open the festival live on Radio Kerry from the River Island Hotel - all welcome

10pm. Pub Trail begins with organised and impromptu sessions with Ireland’s top traditional musicians in pubs throughout the town. A detailed programme will be available in the pubs and hotel. 

Saturday, October 26th : 

11.30am: Cúpla Focal le Éamonn Ó Braoin - Brush up on your conversational Irish in an informal, relaxed class with Éamonn Ó Braoin at Jam Restaurant - beside the library. 

2 pm to 5pm A Fiddle workshops at St. Patrick’s College - College Road. All levels catered for with Connie O’Connell, Emma O’Leary and Paddy Jones. 

2pm: Pub trail continues all day.

3pm: Singing afternoon in Hartnett’s Bar with Mickey MacConnell, Tim Dennehy, Singers and listeners welcome. Aileen Rowntree hosts.

8pm: Official opening of art exhibition by Minister for Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht, Jimmy Deenihan, TD. River Island Hotel

8.30 pm Presentation of the Patrick O’Keeffe award for dedication to the music of Sliabh Luachra to Dan Murphy of Abbeyfeale.

Saturday Night: Pub trail continues until late. 

Sunday, October 27th:
11:30am Mass with traditional music for the departed friends of the festival. Followed by a musical remembrance at Mike Kenny’s grave, St. John’s graveyard.

1pm: Pub trail runs all day. 

3pm: Set Dancing in the River Island Hotel with Ger Murphy of the Abbey Ceili Band.

3pm: Poetry Extravaganza with Gabriel Fitzmaurice, guests and friends. All welcome to Con’s Bar in the River Island Hotel. 

5.00pm: lecture by Peter Browne on Patrick O’Keeffe the Sliabh Luachra fiddle master.

Sunday night: Pub Trail Continues. 

Sunday Night 8.00 p.m. Grand Concert at the River Island Hotel. 
Then it’s the turn of Frankie Gavin and De Dannan with singer, Michelle Lally and a host of guests and surprises.

Monday, October 28th
1pm. pub trail will continue all day till late.

3pm: Day two of the singing workshop at The Poets Inn.
Mikey O’Connor will be the host here and local and visiting singers are welcome.

3pm: A lecture by Jack Roche on the state of traditional music in the Sliabh Luachra area in the modern era and 50 years after the passing of Patrick O’Keeffe.
